What Makes a Dog a “Small Dog Breed?”
Dogs that weigh between 12 and 22 pounds and stand less than 16 inches tall at the shoulder are characterized as “small dog breeds,” by the American Kennel Club (AKC). However, the AKC also notes that some breeds can be smaller or larger than these general guidelines and that size can vary within a breed.
Small breed dogs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the pocket-sized Teacup Poodle to the sturdy Cocker Spaniel. These little doggy breeds are characterized by their adaptability, agility, and, of course, their cuteness. The most common small dog breed in the world is the Mexican Chihuahua, while the rarest small dog breed in the world is the Swedish Norrbottenspets.

One of the most well-known dogs in the world, and the most popular small breed in the world, this little dog was named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. This is one of the littlest dog breeds, and because of its south-of-the-border origins, the Chihuahua is a heat seeker. So be prepared to provide this little doggy with its own well-stocked wardrobe of warm winter clothing and burrow of blankets.
Chinese Crested – Hairless
Originating in Africa and later developed in China, the Chinese Crested Hairless breed has only long tufts of hair on its head, feet, and tail. This little dogs breed is often used as show dogs because their unique looks. They are also known for their affectionate and playful personalities.
Chinese Crested – Powderpuff
The Chinese Crested Powderpuff is a variation of the Chinese Crested breed, with a full coat of soft, silky fur. These little dogs were also originally bred in Africa and later developed in China. Despite having a completely different look than their hairless counterparts, they share the same friendly and playful personality.
